How cribbage plays here
- The deal: six cards each. Throw two to the dealer's crib — it is counted later as the dealer's second hand, so feed it kindly when it is yours and starve it when it is not.
- Pegging: take turns playing cards toward 31. Score 2 for making 15 or exactly 31, 2/6/12 for a pair/pair royal/double pair royal with the cards just played, and points for a run of 3+ in the cards just played, in any order. Can't play without passing 31? Say go — whoever played last takes 1, and a fresh run starts.
- The count: after pegging, the non-dealer counts first, then the dealer, then the crib — always in that order, and the match can end mid-count. Fifteens score 2 each, pairs 2, runs score their length (double runs count twice), a flush scores 4 in hand (5 with the cut — in the crib only all five count), and the Jack of the cut's suit — his nobs — scores 1. A Jack turned up as the cut scores the dealer 2 for his heels.
- The race: Quick matches run to 61, the league length. Classic runs the full board to 121 — and if the loser stalls before 91, that is a skunk, marked on the board in gold.
- The perfect hand: 29 — three 5s and a Jack in hand, the fourth 5 as the cut. It happens about once in 200,000 hands. Good hunting.
